| Sydney to Christchurch - 2120 km flight |
We start the day with the amazing breakfast buffet at the ParkRoyal. It’s very interactive - they have two fruit juicing stations that we have a lot of fun with, and Erik is mesmerized by the pancake-o-matic - a machine where you press a button and it cooks two perfect little pancakes to order that pop out the end of a conveyor belt.
Then it’s back to the airport for our flight to New Zealand. We’re with China Airlines (out of Taiwan) this time, so lunch is a delicious stir-fry and there are lots of fun subtitled Chinese movies to choose from in addition to the more standard Hollywood fare. We try not to worry too much when our pilot’s announcements over the PA keep calling our destination “Christianchurch”. :P But otherwise the fairly short flight (only 3 hours, which feels like nothing now) is comfortable and enjoyable.
We catch a cab to our accommodations for the night - The Grange B&B in central Christchurch. It’s a cozy and welcoming place with very friendly and helpful staff. Once we’re settled in, we head out to dinner at the nearby restaurant Fiddlesticks, which is highly recommended by guidebooks and our host alike. Their special for the night is a grilled lamb feast for 2, which turns out to be a) amazing and b) way more food than the two of us can finish. We leave happy and stuffed, with a doggy bag for later. Our route home is short but goes past the art museum and its cool outdoor sculpture installations. We wander back and have a very comfortable night’s sleep.
